Fighting The Terrorists By Terrorizing The Innocent

Something I read:
In the United States, the dominant narrative about the use of drones in Pakistan is of a surgically precise and effective tool that makes the US safer by enabling “targeted killing” of terrorists, with minimal downsides or collateral impacts.

This narrative is false.
These are the first words of a devastating report I’ve just read, “Living Under Drones: Death, Injury, and Trauma to Civilians from US Drone Practices in Pakistan”.

This thing is required reading.

This isn’t some half-assed, crazed droolings of some hippy-dippy Lefty twerp who ought to get a bath and a haircut: This was written by Stanford and New York University lawyers—and it shows. It’s clearly and devastatingly written, with the facts, testimony and evidence so scrupulously laid out that it’s almost like the brief for the prosecution of the war crimes trial that we can only pray will one day take place.

Consider this:
Drones hover twenty-four hours a day over communities in northwest Pakistan, striking homes, vehicles, and public spaces without warning. Their presence terrorizes men, women, and children, giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian communities. Those living under drones have to face the constant worry that a deadly strike may be fired at any moment, and the knowledge that they are powerless to protect themselves. These fears have affected behavior. The US practice of striking one area multiple times, and evidence that it has killed rescuers, makes both community members and humanitarian workers afraid or unwilling to assist injured victims.
The bold emphasis is mine. I highlighted it because it reminded me of a tactic that terrorists are famous for using: Plant a bomb and kill some people, and when the ambulance, police and rescuers arrive, set off a second bomb so as to kill even more people.

I’m still processing this report, but the questions that immediately come to mind—jumbled, confused, unsystematic, irrational, yet crucial just the same—are myriad:

• How much courage does it take to kill innocent people by remote control?

• What can be gained by murdering women and children who have never done anyone any harm?

• What happens to a cause or country that achieves “victory” by terrorizing innocent human beings?

• How can the people who carry out such evil possibly live with themselves?

• How can anyone with any sense of decency follow the leadership of men and women who would knowingly commit such atrocious and despicable acts?

Notice those questions: They are the questions people ask of terrorists who commit murder for the sake of their cause—

—but they are also now the questions any humane, decent person must ask of the United States.

Because the United States is now the greatest terrorist agent in the world.

How do I know that the U.S. is now a terrorist state? Do I know because it has killed more innocent people in the last twelve months than all other “terrorists” in the world combined?

No. Terrorism isn’t a matter of numbers—it’s a matter of fear: Putting terror—blinding, relentless fear—into the hearts and souls of people who have done nothing wrong. As in the words of this Pakistani boy:
“We cannot figure out when a drone will strike—they may strike in two days, three days, ten days, or a month—but they are always there.”
That is how I know that America has become a terrorist state.

The question for any and every American citizen is: Will you stand up and fight a government which—in your name—is terrorizing innocent people?

Or will you acquiesce to this evil.

I will not acquiesce, I will act by spreading the word of our governments misdeeds, by always voting - for third party candidates.

BTW, thanks for the link to this report. I have been arguing against the use of the drones for a good while. I mean, geez, put the shoe on the other foot. If ANY other country attempted to do something like that in the US, we would all go ballistic. So...that makes it right to do somewhere else a) because we can and b) to protect our "freedom".

I no longer have any desire to travel outside of our country. For safety reasons alone.

    1. "If ANY 'other' country attempted to do something like that in the US"? Just read the NDAA that Obummer signed into law last December. This atrocious "law" declared the United States a war zone, allowing military activities to occur in our homeland!!! Translation: The United States government has declared war against the citizens of the United States. That alone is historic (meaning, without historical precedent): Obummer followed the footsteps of one of his political idols (Lincoln) in doing this.

  3. Gracias Gonzalo for your powerful words! I despise all evil! I'm all in for God's Kingdom, his GOVERNMENT, by Christ Jesus our Lord. ONLY HE, given all authority in heaven and in earth can stop these demonized, devil, monsters from their evil! Soon, at Armageddon, they all will lick the dust and be annihilated by the spirit of God Almighty, Jehovah of armies. I have every confidence in Jehovah God and in his Son, Jesus Christ to accomplish ending evil and murder and terror. Jesus' reign will be one for a thousand years to restore peace to this earth. All those who have died will be resurrected, John 5:28,29 and all the evil works of Satan, the Devil, and his minions will be broken up. Peace restored forever and ever! The war mongers and murderers will exist no longer. Psalm 37:9-11 reads: For evildoers themselves will be cut off,
But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth. And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it. Jehovah God owes us no explanation but he gives it and tells us that the ruler of the world, Satan the Devil is responsible for this evil and also his minions, the ruling elite of this evil world of mankind. You have but to remember that Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the earth and their glory if he'd fall down and worship him. It's all about power and ruination. Soon, at Armageddon Jesus will ride forth in the authority of Jehovah God, his Father, and annihilate these evildoers! Revelation 19:11 reads: And I saw the heaven opened, and, look! a white horse. And the one seated upon it is called Faithful and True, and he judges and carries on war in righteousness.12His eyes are a fiery flame, and upon his head are many diadems. He has a name written that no one knows but he himself,13and he is arrayed with an outer garment sprinkled with blood, and the name he is called is The Word of God.14Also, the armies that were in heaven were following him on white horses, and they were clothed in white, clean, fine linen. 15And out of his mouth there protrudes a sharp long sword, that he may strike the nations with it, and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron. He treads too the winepress of the anger of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16And upon his outer garment, even upon his thigh, he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. I saw also an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice and said to all the birds that fly in midheaven: “Come here, be gathered together to the great evening meal of God,18that YOU may eat the fleshy parts of kings and the fleshy parts of military commanders and the fleshy parts of strong men and the fleshy parts of horses and of those seated upon them, and the fleshy parts of all, of freemen as well as of slaves and of small ones and great.” While still alive, they both were hurled into the fiery lake that burns with sulphur.21But the rest were killed off with the long sword of the one seated on the horse, which [sword] proceeded out of his mouth. And all the birds were filled from the fleshy parts of them." Jehovah God has a plan and it's in full force today! When the preaching work is done worldwide to God's satisfaction, the SWHTF! Get ready for soon you will see the destruction of false religion, Babylon the Great world wide. The political element will destroy her first! It will be such a global shock as such as never seen before! The wealth of the religions of the world will be seized! Utter annihilation of all false religion! Gone forever!

HOWEVER, if these people would stand up against the terrorist extremist that they allow to live amongst them, I am confident the US would gladly remove our military from the region. Unfortunately, they do not stand up and rather protect them. In order to protect our citizens and freedoms this is a necessary evil. War is never pleasant and often has negative long lasting effects on both sides. We need to keep in mind that we did not strike first, we are only defending our liberties.

And honestly, in the so called battle between the "terrorists" and the US government; one side has done me exactly no harm, ever.

While the other side sends thugs my way to rob me of half my earnings. That they then proceed to spend on bombing the other side, on stripping and body cavity searching my kids, by harassing me for wanting to procure the means to defend myself against either side should need arise, etc., etc.

And before anyone whines about 9/11; if rich people in tall building in NYC are afraid of incoming aircraft, rich people in tall buildings in NYC could go buy themselves some anti air defenses, leaving me out of it. Unless, of course, one of the sides in the above mentioned "battle" use their thug army to prevent them from doing so..... Wonder which side that would be....

    4. The US won't stop because preventing terrorism isn't the real goal. The US needs war to survive. Neither the government nor the economy would know how to exist without war. This country is the war-mongering king of a war-mongering world.

The constant military pressure on Muslim nations only pushes normal citizens into the arms of extremists. As a nation we live up to all the bad-mouthing the Islamists spew. We are getting exactly what we deserve as a nation. And we the people are too apathetic to worry about it.

    5. You have to pick sides sometimes in life. You are either giving birth to, feeding, screwing, or otherwise supporting a terrorist, or you are actively working to eliminate them. You are not "innocent" in any sense of the word if you're cooking him dinner, shopping for him, and bearing his children. You're an accomplice. You're every bit as much a target as the supply clerk or cook in a military organization. They don't shoot anybody, they don't plan anything, but they support those who do.

This is of course unfortunate, but then who chose to play the game of war with those rules? They did.

Members of a society pay for its sins in one way or another. Tolerate terrorism and forced subjugation of others and you'll wind up paying, even if you tried to take the easy way out and just lay low.

Interestingly enough, about the only place where people thus have control over "their" government, is in Northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. Which I guess scares out of control governments into bombing them, for fear that others should seek the same privilege.

The Pashtuns won't have it. In the aftermath of 9/11, they were asked to expel and keep out foreign terrorists. They refused to. They have chosen war with us, and we have given it to them. A war with *no* civilian casualties is not possible.

And I'm not, hence we're not, "giving it" to "them."

All that is happening is that the thugband that robs me of half my earnings every year, and threatens to kill me should I desire to procure the means to realistically defend myself against "terrorists" and thugs in the 21st century, have decided to use a fraction of the money they steal from me every year, to kill people semi randomly somewhere halfway around the world. Obviously hoping that by doing so, while simultaneously spinning stories about how those they kill are somehow dangerous goblins or terrorists or virgins or some other such supposedly scary things, I should be less bothered by having my stuff stolen by them. 1. Something you won't read anywhere about these drone strikes is the details of the approval process. Every tactical decision is made under the direction of a lawyer.

A target is identified and confirmed. The innocents likely to be taken out in a strike are identified as innocents. Then it gets sent to the JAG lawyers.

The lawyers decide whether or not to move forward with the drone strike.

      The reason?

Remember the cigarette studies in the 1980s?

Scientific and medical studies conducted by the tobacco companies were overseen by tobacco lawyers. If and when the outcomes of the studies came to light they could been deemed as protected by attorney client privilege. Buried forever.

Remember the Vietnam War era Pentagon Papers, released to the press by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg? They got splashed all over the newspapers, much to the embarrassment of our government.

There will be no Iraq Papers.

      Or Afghanistan Papers.

      Or Yemen Papers.

      Or Libya Papers.

      Or Iran Papers.

      Or Peoria Papers.

All our conduct of war - against both foreigners and American citizens - is now and will be masked by the cloak of attorney client privilege. The truth about these actions will be completely hidden from public view.

The law is intended to uphold justice. It is being perverted to enable and promote injustice.

We live in a sick world.

  18. TPTB continue to engage American military power in Afghanistan for a number of reasons, none of which has anything any longer to do with preventing terrorism or bringing freedom and democracy to anyone.

The purposes are various and not necessarily in this order: To prevent the construction of an oil and gas pipeline from Iran to either India or most especially to China. To construct and economically control a future gas pipeline from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to the “Indian subcontinent” in order to control India's source of energy so as to control India politically. To be in a better position to control the flow and profits from energy pipelines coming out of the Caspian Sea area to the advantage of Western Corporations. To acquire permanent bases in Afghanistan in order to threaten China, Russia, and Iran. To politically control the central Asian post Soviet region to the disadvantage of Russia and thereby (hopefully) to weaken Russia generally and disrupt Russia's attempt to reassert itself in its "near abroad". To be in the best position to control and profit in future from mineral extraction in Afghanistan once the country becomes pacified. To destabilize Pakistan so as to possibly break up the country with an eye to controlling the mineral wealth of Baluchistan. To generate wealth, status, and power for the Military Industrial Complex and for the politicians who associsate themselves with the same. To maintain a permanent state of war psychology for the domestic political purpose of intimidation and control of an increasingly impoverished and angry American population, etc etc.

Now, if political, military, and economic elites are willing to engage in such a Foreign-Military-Domestic policy, and are willing to sacrifice many tens of thousands of American working class soldiers, dead and wounded, what would a thousand dead kids on the other side of the world matter to them?

Drones are just another weapon employed in a war that's now mostly about geopolitical positioning and profit. Drones most likely create more resistance than they do long term military advantage. But in the end, it's the Afghanistan policy in the context of the American strategic goal of Full Spectrum (military and economic)Dominance that's the real issue.

It's bombing Dresden to make a point, to wit, you are not safe until the war is over and hostilities cease. Rein in the Taliban or this is how you will live.
The Taliban aren't stopping why should the US?

    1. This has been shown through history to be an effective strategy. There are probably many more dead from half-measures in warfare than through fighting to win and getting it over with.

  35. Not that I approve of most of the methods used in the "war on terrorism", or the fact that we even have military forces stationed outside our borders, but using the same word for our actions as those who purposely target innocents and trying to paint it as equivalent makes about as much sense as your humiliatingly arrogant call for "hyperinflation by 2011 at the latest".

You sure do pop off a lot, don't you?
